So here's the chapter for exploring all the record-breaking, extreme (and extremely weird) sports in the world. Talk about the world of the X Games with older kids (or teens).
Be sure to check out the Top End Sports website for all the weird, wacky sports and races you've never heard of. Some of my favorites are listed below and can be done with little to no cost!
*Have a thumb and/or finger wrestling tournament
*Gurning competition (Can you make an ugly face?)
*Cheese rolling
*Pancake races - not from Top End Sports, but see the manual on pg 121.
*And of course, beard and mustache competitions. Since most kids aren't growing mustaches or beards - do a craft instead!

What else? How about a library book of records? Use the Guinness Book of World Records as an inspiration! Also, use this famous Iowan as a reminder that all of us can be good at something.
Another great idea? Bike Rodeo (pg 131-132). The Iowa City Schools do this in elementary schools in the spring, but it could certainly be recreated in the summer. Bring in bike enthusiasts, the local police so they can register bikes (and do car seat checks at the same time). Make a bicycle license plate and have a bike parade. Fun family activity!
