Live Action Minecraft

Picture

about

Minecraft is a popular computer game played by all ages. In the game, the player creates worlds using square blocks. The Cedar Rapids Public Library presented Live Action Minecraft twice, with hundreds of people attending each event. The event was created by Jennifer Jordeberk, Assistant Director at North Liberty Community Library and Molly Garrett, Young Adult Librarian at the Cedar Rapids Public Library.

In our Minecraft world, card board boxes were used to create the blocks. The players were then invited to build their own structures. In conjunction with the building, players were encouraged to use the guide to create tools, mine materials, and avoid the creepers. We had crafts and snacks available. There was also an online aspect where players could log in to their Minecraft account and play online. The event happened all day throughout the library with the help of volunteers and staff.

Volunteers worked for months to help create the Minecraft world. The Teen Advisory Board even ran a box hospital the day of the event.

tips

  • Don't go all day. This was an all day drop in event that lasted almost 11 hours.
  • Have plenty of volunteers.
  • Save time and money by not wrapping the boxes. Even though it looks pretty, they will be destroyed.
  • You can always have more boxes.
